This softcover book contains the records of Mt. Elliott, the earliest existent Catholic cemetery in Detroit, which is located on Mt. Elliott Street about three blocks north of Jefferson Avenue. It was named for Robert T. Elliott who was instrumental in its purchase and who became the first burial in 1841 following his accidental death. Due to a fire, which burned the cemetery office around 1865, many early burial records were destroyed. The book was taken from plot sales lists and burial records of 1845-1847 in the archival holdings of the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, and burial lists from 1854-1861 were taken from weekly or monthly reports filed in the Detroit City Clerk's office by the sexton of the cemetery. This book, published in 1994, is 74 pages including the index. |
